At 23 years old, Nakyesa Charity is demonstrating how improved agricultural knowledge can open new opportunities for young farmers.

Charity is a smallholder farmer from Lumbuye Ward in Kaliro District. She joined AMUKA in 2025 and received training in improved groundnut production. The training covered quality seed selection, land preparation, timely planting, recommended spacing, regular weeding, integrated pest management, harvesting, drying and storage. She also gained access to good-quality groundnut seed.

Charity applied the recommended practices and expanded her groundnut production in Kasokwe from a small portion of land to one acre. During the first season after adopting the improved practices, she harvested eight bags of groundnuts.

The increased income from groundnut sales enabled her to pay school fees for some of her children. She also invested part of her earnings in her shop, strengthening another source of livelihood for her household.

Her progress has not stopped at production. Charity now shares practical knowledge on improved groundnut production, post-harvest handling and collective marketing with other farmers in her community.

Her experience demonstrates how agricultural production can become a platform for wider household economic activity when farmers are able to combine improved production practices with reinvestment.

Charity continues to face challenges, including limited access to land, machinery and opportunities for value addition. Machinery constraints can delay planting, while limited value-addition facilities restrict opportunities to develop additional groundnut products.

Looking ahead, Charity has expressed an interest in starting a piggery project, indicating her ambition to diversify her household enterprise activities.
