For Kibumba Robert, groundnut farming presented an opportunity to improve his family's livelihood, but before joining AMUKA he had limited knowledge about improved groundnut production.
Robert, a smallholder farmer from Bukebwe, Nawaikona in Namutumba District, joined AMUKA in 2025 and received training in improved methods of groundnut production. The training covered quality seed selection, land preparation, timely planting, recommended spacing, regular weeding, integrated pest management, harvesting, drying and storage. He also gained access to good-quality groundnut seed.
Robert applied the new knowledge on his farm and expanded his groundnut production from a small portion of land to one acre. During the first season after adopting the improved practices, he harvested 11 bags of groundnuts from the acre.
The increased production translated into additional income for his household. Robert used proceeds from the sale of his groundnuts to pay school fees for some of his children and make improvements to his house.
He also invested part of his earnings in hiring additional land, allowing him to expand his production further.
Robert's experience has also extended beyond his own household. He now shares knowledge on improved groundnut production, post-harvest handling and collective marketing with other farmers. His experience has made him a farmer whom others consult when they want to learn about groundnut production.
However, Robert continues to face challenges, particularly limited access to machinery, which can delay planting, as well as limited opportunities for value addition. The family also experienced the effects of drought.
Despite these challenges, Robert's experience demonstrates the potential of improved agricultural knowledge and quality seed to increase production and contribute to household welfare.
