Mukisa Jonathan is a young farmer whose experience with AMUKA demonstrates how improved agricultural knowledge and access to seed can encourage young people to invest in farming.
A youth farmer originally from Namutumba and now living in Busei, Jonathan received training from AMUKA in modern groundnut production. The training covered land preparation, timely planting, correct spacing, pest management and post-harvest handling.
He began by cultivating a small piece of land. After achieving a fair harvest, he was encouraged to expand his production. He subsequently increased his groundnut garden to one acre and recorded a harvest of several bags in the following season.
The increased production enabled him to reinvest proceeds in farming and address some household needs. He also returned the revolving seed he had received through the AMUKA arrangement and retained surplus seed for further planting.
One of the important changes for Jonathan is that he no longer needs to depend entirely on purchasing seed because he has retained seed from his own production.
His experience has also encouraged other young farmers in Namutumba to consider improved groundnut production practices.
Jonathan nevertheless faces challenges, particularly limited access to shelling machines and other post-harvest equipment. These limitations affect the efficiency of processing and value addition.
His long-term ambition is to develop groundnut farming into a business.
